All Natural Foods you should NEVER give to your Dog

While feeding your dog all natural is becoming more of a norm, it is important that you know what human foods to avoid when mixing up ingredients to feed your dog.  What may be a healthy food for you could be fatal to your beloved dog.

Dogs cannot determine what is harmful to them.  If it smells good, then they will eat it.  You cannot gauge what is harmful for a dog by whether they will eat it or not.  They will eat it, regardless.  It is up to you, as the owner, to take care of your dog and make sure you know what can harm him.
Dogs LOVE Chocolate – But Beware – It can be Fatal
As a pet owner, you want the best for your dog.  It is sometimes hard to just say no, especially when they come up to you with those loving and longing eyes!  But, you must draw the line at chocolate.  This not only includes milk chocolate, but it includes white and baking chocolates.
Chocolate has high amounts of fat and caffeine-like stimulants called methylxanthines.   When a dog ingests large amounts of chocolate, dogs can be affected differently.  Dogs may experience vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, hyperactivity, and even death.
More All Natural Foods to Avoid

  • Chicken, pork or fish bones – These bones can splinter and get stuck in their jaw or throat and cause them to choke.  The bones can also get into their digestive system and tear it up.
  • Tea or Coffee – Anything with caffeine can be toxic.  These can cause seizures and can affect the heart and nervous system.
  • Grapes or Raisins – These can cause diarrhea, vomiting, and for more severe cases – kidney failure.
  • Dairy Products - Never give your dog dairy products.  Dogs are lactose intolerant.
  • Avocados - These are very toxic to dogs.
  • Gum – Keep your gum picked up.  Sugar free gum can be deadly because of the ingredient called xylitol.  This can lower your dog’s blood sugar levels, which can be fatal.
  • Mushrooms – These contains toxins that can cause liver and kidney damage.
  • Onions – Raw and cooked onions alike can damage a dog’s blood cells and cause anemia in the dog.
  • Macadamia Nuts – These have a compound in them that can cause your dog’s hind legs to become paralyzed temporarily.

Making the decision to feed your dog all natural food is a very wise decision.  However, there are some excellent herbal pet foods and maintenance formulas that are already packed full of the proper amounts of vitamins, minerals, protein, etc. that are necessary for healthy dog foods.  Flint River Ranch and Life’s Abundance are excellent quality brands that make all natural dog food.

Just remember that feeding your dog all natural is wonderful, but you need to be careful about what you feed your dog if you do choose to make your own dog food.  Pay attention to what you are putting into your dog’s food, and be sure to keep the above foods out of their reach.  These are items you can throw in your garbage.  Take care that your dog is not able to get to these foods if your dog is known for sneaking into the garbage.
